Fourteen-man Australian squad for Travelex Tour of New Zealand

Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP) has announced a 14-man squad for the Travelex one-day international Tour of New Zealand, beginning in Auckland next week.

The squad to face New Zealand in a Twenty20 match and five one-day internationals is:

Name State Age Matches
Ricky Ponting (C) Tas 30 213
Adam Gilchrist (VC) WA 33 204
Michael Clarke NSW 23 44
Jason Gillespie SA 29 84
Matthew Hayden QLD 33 108
Brad Hogg WA 34 57
James Hopes QLD 26 0
Michael Hussey WA 29 1
Michael Kasprowicz QLD 33 34
Simon Katich NSW 29 11
Brett Lee NSW 28 99
Damien Martyn WA 33 166
Glenn McGrath NSW 35 201
Andrew Symonds QLD 29 111

Selection sees two changes to the 14-man squad that claimed victory in the recent VB Series involving Pakistan and the West Indies.

South Australian veteran Darren Lehmann has made way for Western Australian batsman Mike Hussey, whilst injured Shane Watson has been replaced by another Queensland all-rounder, James Hopes.

Commenting on the decision to omit Lehmann from the squad, NSP Chairman Trevor Hohns said: “There were some very hard decisions to make when choosing this squad, none more so than having to overlook Darren Lehmann.

“Darren has been a wonderful player for Australia over a long period of time. Throughout his career, his performances have been first class, which has been a telling factor in the team’s terrific run of success.

“Not only that, but his unofficial role as a leader amongst the squad has been outstanding. He has been a fine team man.

“However as a selection panel we have to start looking to the future. At 35, age is not on Darren’s side and it is fair to say that his performances of late were becoming a concern.

“Unfortunately it’s one of those tough calls that as selectors we have to make but it is time for us to move forward.”

Lehmann’s replacement, Hussey, has scored 362 runs in the 2004-05 ING Cup at an average of 40.22, whilst 26-year-old Hopes has scored 291 runs at 36.37 and claimed 11 wickets at 29.18.

On naming Hussey and Hopes in the squad Hohns said: “Mike Hussey has been knocking on the door for some time. He has scored runs consistently at domestic level and we feel that if given the opportunity, could do a very good job for Australia, particularly in the middle order.

“He impressed us when making his one-day debut in Perth last summer and we said at the time that he had certainly put his case forward for future selections.

“It is fair to say that this is a reward for consistency.

“James Hopes is an exciting prospect - another young talent who we have been keeping a close watch on.

“Like Shane Watson, he can perform a variety of roles for us.

“He has put some excellent performances on the board for Queensland throughout the year and we feel that this opportunity will fast-track his development.”

The Australian one-day international squad will travel to New Zealand on Wednesday 16 February. Media arrangements prior to departure and upon arrival in New Zealand will be advised in due course.

The Australian Test squad is expected to be announced at the end of February. Further announcement details will be announced in due course.
